What are the signs I need to get my gutter fixed?
Although it’s good to keep them free of debris, leaves are just the beginning. It’s easiest to get a plumber to check them out, especially after a storm, but if you’re feeling up to it here’s a few tips:
- Evidence of water in the interior of your home. Leaks from the exterior of the house are often the cause of this, which can be a hard place to check by yourself. Whether it’s a decade-old watermark or brand new, it’s best to get it checked out to make sure the next storm won’t worsen it, causing even more costly damage… and smells.
- Perhaps the most obvious tip is to inspect your gutters. Look for cracks or holes and areas where the guttering sags. This can be rather difficult, especially if the gutters are located in awkward positions or high up. It’s easy to miss a spot when doing it on your own, so our plumbers are happy to help you out.
- Gutters are losing paint or rusting and are pulling away from the roof. If your gutters look like they’re deteriorating it’s a tell-tale sign they’re in dire need of help. But what’s worse is when they’re separating from the roof. With many older homes around, when this happens your home is susceptible to the effects of water and if you have a timber house it’s a sure sign of wood rot.
- If there’s no water coming from the downspout or it’s spilling over the edges. That makes it clear there’s some clogging it or there’s another underlying issue, which can be a helpful tip if you don’t want to grab a ladder and check for yourself. It could mean your gutters have broken at a section, resulting in water pouring down an unintended area.
- Plants and pests are gathering in your gutters. Whilst you have made a roof garden, you haven’t made a smooth-running roof system. It’s just another sign that your gutter systems are in need of maintenance, plus you might snag a couple plants out of it too!
Poor gutter maintenance can have more drastic effects than you think.
Water is a powerful element that, if unguided, can erode and age the side, foundations and interior of your house, plus your garden! Keeping the house in check is often the last thing on our mind whilst trying to keep the kids calm as the thunder rumbles outside. In order to keep a calm interior, there needs to be a calm exterior too.
Don’t hold off on getting your gutters checked and maintained by our qualified Toowoomba plumbers at X Factor Plumbing for the stormy nights ahead. If the damage is already done, we can help too, so get prepared for the storms, your future to-do list will thank you.
